In this first battle of the British Empire against the Boer Commando’s against the famous Tugela Ridge, we would like to just point out a few highlights.

This battle was in all aspects the darkest moment of Black Week , as it became known in England. 23000 of Her Majesty’s finest soldiers, five Brigades, attacked at Colenso and had to retreat after suffering heavy losses from a well entrenched Boer force counting only 4700. Seven Victoria Crosses was awarded for bravery. Gen. Buller lost ten artillery pieces and the Irish Brigade under command of Gen.
