Battle of Ladysmith: 30 October 1899

Battle of Nicholsons Neck & Tchrengula, Modderspruit and Rietfontein (also known as the Battle of Ladysmith)  Stretching on the Northern side of Ladysmith, next to Surprise hill right to Lombards Nek on the South Western side, Gen Sir George White chose these positions to give cover fire for the troops coming into Ladysmith, and stop the Boer advance.

The Boer Commando’s attacked over the whole front. Gen. Louis Botha and Christiaan de Wet from the Free State secured a brilliant victory for the Boers. More than 1000 British prisoners were taken. Troops were driven from their positions, and with the panic caused by these victories, a general evacuation took place over the whole front. The Boer attack was called to a halt by the aging Boer Commandant Gen Piet Joubert. The younger Boer officers, seeing the opportunity to take the town of Ladysmith begged Piet Joubert to release his cavalry. The old General answered with these famous words:- “If God Gives you the pinkie, you don’t grab the whole hand. We have them captured in Ladysmith. Why spill more Blood?” A golden opportunity was lost, and 1400 British troops was besieged in Ladysmith.
