Gen. Sir Charles Warren, who came with the Fifth Army from Cape Town as reinforcement after the disaster at Colenso was put in command to launch a surprise attack. Gen. Buller was attempting to split the Boer forces by launching mock attacks at Potgieters Drift, and shelling their positions at Colenso. At the same time Gen. Warren was to move his troops at midnight on Jan. 16 around the Boer positions on ThabaNyama to establish the final break through their defences.
This move of Gen. Warren succeeded to catch the Boer Commandoes on the wrong foot and could have resulted in a break through their defences, but Warren wasted time in crossing a full flowing Tugela river with all his supplies. With the element of surprise gone he was facing an enemy who made full use of the valleys and two mile flat top of ThabaNyama to mow down the British troops with very accurate rifle and artillery fire.
